Grand Tour
There’s a whole range of ways to experience Ten Days and make the most of all Tasmania has to offer. Soak up the scenery, indulge in the food and wine, and experience the very special events on offer across the art forms in over 62 communities and at some of Tasmania’s most spectacular destinations.
To help you get the most from your Ten Days experience, Artistic Director Elizabeth Walsh has planned a Ten Days Grand Tour and here it is.
Take on the full trip, have a weekend away or enjoy a night out close to home.
DAY 1: HOBART

Dine at one of the waterfront’s fabulous restaurants and catch the free performances of Dinosaur Petting Zoo on Parliament House Lawns and Craig Walsh’s Digital Odyssey projections. Then head to the Theatre Royal for the opening night of the Australian premiere of Animal Farm and round off your night at Dance Hall with DBR & DJ Scientific and Emeline Michel.
DAY 2: HOBART

Stroll through the historic waterfront precinct to Australia’s most renowned outdoor markets in Salamanca Place. Get moving on Hobart’s ArtBikes and pedal your way round the galleries. Then head off to Bruny Island for lunch and the world premiere of the chamber opera, Minotaur – The Island. Stop into Kettering for Djupid (The Deep), then head over to Cygnet for the premiere of the new Tasdance show, Artery.
DAY 3: TASMAN PENINSULA

Take a drive down the Tasman Peninsula, stopping in for a community celebration and the opening of the Dunalley Calico Museum, then head on to Port Arthur Historic Site for a BBQ lunch and the spectacular performance by Strange Fruit of Ringing the Changes. Then it’s into the woods at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens for the magical experience of Power Plant.
DAY 4: EAST COAST

Visit the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) before you drop into The Barn in Rosny and catch the sights and sounds of Pacific Reggae: Roots Beyond the Reef. Then head east, making sure to enjoy a leisurely lunch at a cellar door restaurant or sample a feast of oysters on your way to hear Catriona McKay and Chris Stout in Sorell.
DAY 5: EAST COAST

Tune into ABC Radio 91.7FM while you drive to catch a special broadcast, featuring Ten Days artists, in celebration of the centenary of the Princess Theatre in Launceston. Take your time heading up the stunning east coast, making sure you drop into the award-winning wineries along the way, before enjoying a night at the pictures in Swansea with Far Flung Flicks.
DAY 6: NORTH EAST COAST

Visit Coles Bay, the incredible Freycinet National Park and explore the pristine beaches of the Bay of Fires or book in for a round of golf at one of the world’s most unique links courses with spectacular view of Bass Strait at Barnbugle Dunes . Then head back inland to Ringarooma for an evening with the locals to enjoy the folk music of Færd.
DAY 7: LAUNCESTON

Let the wine route through the West Tamar lead you astray and leave plenty of time for a long lunch at one of the cellar door restaurants, a specialty of the region. Make sure you see one of the In TEERS installations in Georgetown. Then it’s on to Longford to hear the sounds of the Eastern Mediterranean explored through the music of En Chordais. Then into Launceston and the Earl Arts Centre for The Bougainville Photoplay Project.
DAY 8: NORTH WEST COAST

Spend your morning roaming the galleries: Flat, Stack, Fold at the Design Centre Tasmania, River Effects at the Academy Gallery and enjoy the finalists from FIFO. Hit the road westward, stopping at the Devonport Regional Gallery to see Tales from Suburbia and divulge a State Secret with a stop with Tawdry Heartburn. Then on the Burnie Regional Gallery for Shorelines and the Burnie Print Prize. It’s a short drive to Gunns Plains to end your day seeing Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac with Quinn Bachand.
DAY 9: WEST COAST

Today it’s your choice… head south via the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery for Changing Paradigms and on to Zeehan’s grand old theatre The Gaiety to see Feyiety, an Edwardian-era cinematic vaudeville show. Then down to Strahan for a ride on West Coast Wilderness Railway or cruise down the astonishingly beautiful Gordon River. See the longest running play in Australia The Ship That Never Was, and then a night at the Dance Hall in Queenstown with Mim Suleiman and Trio Rafiki Jazz. Or you could meander back southwards to hear The Black Arm Band in Hidden Republic with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
DAY 10: HOBART
Sunday 3 AprilView all events for this day
Winding your way east from the West Coast make sure to stop off at The Wall in the Wilderness at Derwent Bridge, a carved history of Tasmania. Back in Hobart, spend the morning with the Tasmanian Writers’ Centre programme and the afternoon at the announcement of the Tasmanian Book Prizes. Then it’s time for theatre: Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry and Chronicles of Long Kesh or Poxed. Then don your glad rags for a final fling at the Dance Hall with Errol Renaud & Caribbean Soul and bid farewell to a Ten Days you’ll never forget.
