What an incredible Ten Days we just shared!

500 Tasmanian, Australian and International artists gave us 175 performances of 44 different events in 83 venues across ten Tasmanian towns, Flinders Island, King Island and Port Arthur. Thousands of ticket holders revelled in theatre, music, dance & literature events, and thousands more joined us for free displays of film, physical theatre, design, visual arts and a spectacular outdoor closing concert.

We loved every moment of the last Ten Days, and we are excited to share ten of our favourite Ten Days festival moments:

• Presenting the premier performances of As We Forgive, Shadow Dreams, Finding Centre, The Tree Widows, On Your Marks and The Dream of the Thylacine.

• Bringing the exclusive Australian season of The Select (The Sun Also Rises) to the Theatre Royal for six astounding performances.

• Seeing audiences transported by the heavenly sounds of Corsica’s A Filetta at their sold out shows, held in Tasmania’s most historic and beautiful churches.

• Tasmanians from Swansea to Burnie hearting I ❤ ALICE ❤ I with full houses, standing ovations and community donations of delicious baked cakes at each performance.

• The crowds at Sprag Session dancing in the aisles at sold out shows from Huonville to St Helens and wrapping up the festival in fine style with a free performance in St David’s Park.

• Grace Barbé having everyone “shaking their coconuts” at her sold our performances and funky free workshop for music and music lovers and Dame Kiri te Kanawa delighting opera lovers at three sold out shows.

• People in their hundreds joining us in Queenstown, Deloraine and across the state to see Circa delight with their free performances of 21 Circus Acts in 20 Minutes.

• A stunning range of visual arts commissioned, created and curated in free exhibitions across the state and Hannah Gadsby’s Mary.Contrary art lecture so popular we had to add extra shows.

• Watching over 2,000 school children participate in the Festival with exclusive performances for students across Tasmania.

• Seeing international artists and performers connect with artists in the Tasmanian community and hearing their stories of what each learned from the other though our Beyond Ten Days programme. Traditional Tasmanian fiddle music will now be played in Cape Bretton and young circus performers on the West Coast have new tricks to display direct from London’s West End.

This is the presentation of the programme our Artistic Director, Jo Duffy, shared with us:

Hello!

I would like to start by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we are standing tonight – the Palawa Pakana and pay my respects to their Elders past and present.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have 37 days to go until Tasmania’s international arts festival starts. Yet, unlike everyone else we’re NOT starting with “a bang”. But with a bullfight, a murder scene, a dancing goat, a fantastically complex internet connection, a Thylacine sighting, the first 63 of 273 circus acts, 82kg of exquisitely twisted Melaleuca paper bark. Even three harrowing acts of revenge.

And that’s just on day one!

Over the past two years we at Ten Days on the Island have been working with community organisations, schools, neighbourhood centres, regional and metropolitan arts groups, councils, businesses large and small, churches and many other people throughout Tasmania to create this 2013 festival.

We’ve also been working with artists – creative, resourceful, talented people from islands all around the world. And if you’ll allow me to indulge – and even boast a little! – the country roll call includes: Malaysia, Manhattan, the Seychelles, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Corsica, Iceland, Scotland, Canada, mainland Australia ... and of course Tasmania.

Any international arts festival must have its own essential motives.

One is innovation. It must be new, it must lead, it must be a catalyst for cultural innovation.

Innovation is at the very core of Shadow Dreams. Put Tasmanian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, the Terrapin Puppet Theatre, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra together with precious Tasmanian Aboriginal traditional stories, the National Broadband Network and Ten Days on the Island and you have a show of national significance that can only be created in Tasmania.

Shadow Dreams is a reflection of Tasmania - Tasmanian artists, Tasmanian artistry, Tasmanian ingenuity and how they take their place on the international stage.
The Griffith Review’s Julianne Shultz recently - and rightly - observed about Tasmania that we need to encourage those people with the ability and determination to make things happen.

I believe that is precisely what we’re doing with Shadow Dreams.

A festival must also stimulate evolution. Despite first impressions, Tasmania is an ever-changing state, an island which welcomes and embraces the new. In recent times, suburbs like Glenorchy have re-invented themselves or have continued to evolve and, as an ex-mainlander, my opinion is that they have become some of the most interesting places to be.

The Other Journey, a story from Sri Lanka, will be staged alongside the water and up in the bushland above Elwick Bay in Glenorchy. This show is “an experience”: you need to submit yourself to be taken to another world, one of movement, aromas, sounds and stories that may come from another place, but belong here deep in suburban Tasmania.

A festival must respect cultural history. Any community is defined by its cultural history, however deep, however obvious. Corsicans past and present are as moulded by it as their daunting mountains are by the wind.

I first had the chance to melt in the company of A Filetta whilst working in Poland about five years ago. The singers featured in the programme in Poland because they were artists conserving the traditional, angelic and inconceivably beautiful music of their island home. We’re setting this astounding group in some of our majestic cathedrals and our tiny, frugal chapels across the state.

And finally, a festival must cultivate transition. Culture is dynamic, ever moving whether we like it or not! It can – and must – change to embrace new values, new ideas, new necessities. The past can be tweaked to bring it into the present and the performance of Hemingway’s 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises” is an extraordinary example of transition.

The Select (The Sun Also Rises) by New York’s Elevator Repair Service is a coup to Tasmania.

But while we may choose to keep this particular show to ourselves, we remain in close cahoots with the other major international arts festivals in Australia in the commissioning of Murder.

Murder was co-commissioned by Ten Days on the Island, the Adelaide Festival, the Melbourne Festival and the Sydney Festival. When I saw it, I felt like I’d been coerced into the dark, seedy mind of Nick Cave. He is one of the world’s most valued songwriters: his tales are timeless and this theatre show brings his words to life on stage.

Be assured, when you look at our programme, we’ve not broken out in a technicolour rash. Each of the colours represents one of the ten "Festival Towns” across the state.

The first of two major changes for this year, these Festival Towns spread Ten Days on the Island evenly and generously across Tasmania. Ten towns host their own international arts festival with our artists and crew effectively becoming residents for the festival season in those towns, leaving a lasting imprint on their community.

The second initiative for 2013 is stimulating and investing in the future. Beyond Ten Days extends the impact and legacy of Ten Days on the Island well beyond 15th to the 24th of March.

Throughout the festival we have over 40 different activities in addition to the artistic programme – opportunities for Tasmanians to come up close and personal to the artists, to learn, to share, exchange and natter. This new Beyond Ten Days programme is a response to the requests of many, many people across the state who asked for this – quite literally.

Before I conclude, I want to say that I have the joyous honour of working with a superb team of people at Ten Days on the Island. Whilst the number of people state-wide who help us put this festival together is enormous, the dedicated and skilled people in our operations, programming, marketing, administration and business development teams are like gold.

This programme is the creation of us all. We’ve been entrusted by Tasmanians to create this festival, and this programme is our response - of which we are immensely proud.

It’s now time to pass it over to you and the rest of Tasmania, to enjoy, to absorb and to immerse yourselves within.

Thank you.
I arrived on Monday afternoon at the pretty little coastal town, just over two hours from Launceston. The main street was full of flowers and green trees, and the shops proudly showed colourful flags, happy faces and friendly locals.

I was so fortunate to be staying just outside of St Helens at Binalong Bay where the water is bright blue, and the sand is a powdery white. Anywhere you look, the view is spectacular. As I write this, I can look out the window from the dining room and see only native trees, calm ocean and a dusky sky. Perfection.

This is one of the many assets of staging an international arts festival in Tasmania! Not only do we have an opportunity to showcase the unique creative talent of our state, but also the beautiful scenery we live amongst.

It was a perfect sunny day, so I wandered through the streets, visiting some of the upcoming venues for Ten Days events in March. The gorgeous Portland Memorial Hall glowed in the sun, and I was quickly welcomed at Gallery Parnella by Beth, and Gallery Mascot Havannah the dog. This lovely clean space will be home to one of Rex Greeno's Ten Canoes in a few weeks time!

Steve and Jan at Crossroads Winebar and Café played host, even providing stubbie holders with each beer! Decked out with slick, black furniture and plenty of Rolling Stone magazines, the St Helens Supper Club is going to be an excellent place to dance the night away after a busy day of gallery visiting or a special night at the theatre.

If you've never been to St Helens, I strongly urge you to use Ten Days as your excuse to get out of town and hit the coast. With a wonderful variety of events, and an unbelievable natural environment, you'll have the best time. The coffee is hot, the beer is cold and the locals like to take it easy. What more could you ask for?!
These new events spread our posse of international artists right across the state. It also features some of as our ‘endurance acts’ who are visiting 5, 10 or even 12 locations each!

The circus rolls into town when Australia’s global sensation Circa traverse the state from north to south, east to west. Somewhat unbelievably they will be throwing themselves into performing 21 Circus Acts in 20 minutes, 13 times in 12 locations for free! Another of our ‘endurance acts’ is Little Big Shots, the international short film festival for kids, we’ve put together a free programme especially for Ten Days of films created on, about and for islands. The Little Big Shots festival director will travel to seven towns as well as visiting schools and holding workshops.

To add to the opera, theatre, dance and visual arts events already available we have more of the world’s best musicians: Scottish legend Dougie MacLean is a folk-music hero and performer of extraordinary warmth and ease; A Filetta, the undisputed masters of polyphonic singing with a commanding stage presence and a Capella sound from the Mediterranean island of Corsica; and the big bolshy sound of Cape Breton Island’s Sprag Session with genuine appeal for ages 8 to 80.

Tasmania is known for its strong and vibrant visual arts culture, stemming from the splendid foundation of talent, dedication, inspiration and an enthusiastic audiences, we have in our midst renowned photographers, sculptors, designers, print makers and creative minds who collaborate internationally. Felt Presence, Tasmania Today, THINKtent, the Burnie Print Prize, The Hemisphere Travellers and Into the Wild fill galleries in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport.

And there's more to be announced at the end of the month!

As the sun shines warmly down and begins to thaw a grateful Tasmania, our thoughts naturally turn towards summer. Which leads to thinking about the beach which, after a few random trains of thought jump tracks (stay with me here peoples!), leads to thinking about that marvelous annual art show, Sculpture by the Sea.

Sculpture by the Sea started as a one day event in 1997 and has grown to become the world’s largest free public outdoor sculpture event. This year, 113 local, national and international artists exhibited their works along the trail, which stretches along the glorious Coastwalk from Bondi to Bronte.

If you’re wondering what this Sydneycentric sculpture talk has to do with Tasmania, you may be interested to know that as part of the inaugural Ten Days festival (way back in 2001) we staged Sculpture by the Sea, Tasman Peninsula. The exhibition was curated by Dick Bett AM, of the Bett Gallery in North Hobart. You can check out the photo gallery here.

This year, we are particularly excited about Sculpture by the Sea (I'll call it SbtS from hereon in) because of two of its veteran exhibitors, American sculptor Peter Lundberg and Tasmania’s Marcus Tatton. Both these internationally renowned artists have an established and popular presence at SbtS having exhibited several times in the past. In fact, Marcus Tatton is a bit of a SbtS legend, having won the Sydney Water Environmental Sculpture Prize in 2006 for his work humbaba’s barrel, The Andrea Stretton Memorial Invitation in 2010 for globoids and a $30,000 Helen Lempriere Scholarship in 2011 for his work the ruin.

Humbaba's Barrel, image from Marcus Tatton's website

We were thrilled to hear of Peter Lundberg winning the prestigious Balnaves Foundation Award for Sculpture by the Sea 2012, the $70,000 acquisitive prize that gifts the winning art work for public display in the Royal Botanical Gardens of Sydney.

Lundberg’s winning sculpture is barrel roll, a behemoth of a piece created in his signature style. Lundberg creates his work in distinctive way; He employs a back hoe to dig a ‘mould’ close to the display site of the work, he fills the 'mould' with steel and concrete, allows it to cure, then raises it like a leviathan from the earth. Lundberg’s works are massive, some reaching over 15 metres tall and weighing over 100 tonnes.

Peter Lundberg with his winning sculpture Barrel Roll, image from Peter Lundberg's website

You can listen to “Art Dude” Henry Mulholland discuss barrel roll and how it was created on the ABC Radio Sydney 702 audio tour of the exhibition, where he says of Lundberg’s work “When he stands them up they become a thing of real beauty and it does draw into question the values of art and sculpture, ugliness, for example as a description rather than a value judgment”. Tatton echoes this when he says “We think Peter’s work is both ugly and beautiful, the rawness is what really speaks out.”

Lundberg says of the piece “It is what it is”.

Tatton’s work pithoi is displayed in this year’s exhibition. The oversized object a reworking of the ancient Greek amphora, is a comment on contemporary status anxiety. Traditionally, the size of the vessel reflected the wealth of the owner as it displayed how much oil, grain or perfume you possessed.

All of this is incredibly exciting because, at the 2013 festival, Tasmanians will have the opportunity to see (for free!) the collaborative fruit of these two great artists’ labours. Peter Lundberg will curate Marcus Tatton’s work in the festival event Tatton@RTBG.

Over three months, from January to March 2013, Marcus Tatton will create eight sculptural environments at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens that explore the notion of Comfort in the Natural World. Peter Lundberg will apply his internationally renowned curatorial skills, that have seen him found sculpture parks across the US and in Sweden, to Marcus' creations.

Tatton@RTBG allows visitors a unique opportunity; to experience an artwork of monumental scale in it's development phase, before the thrill of visiting the exhibition and seeing the finished works. Marcus welcomes visitors and we will be letting people know when he is working in the park via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
