Ten Days 2011. What a year!

Tuesday, December 06, 2011

In 2011 Ten Days held 232 events in 111 venues in 62 locations across Tasmania from Queenstown to Flinders Island from Cygnet to Campbell Town with over 150,000 people enjoying events in theatres, streets, pubs, grand houses, historic sites, gardens, town halls, paddocks and beaches. It has been a year of many successes which we very pleased to announce through our Statement of Activities 2011.

As part of what makes Ten Days 2011 so special were the exciting new works by Tasmanian artists, commissioned for the festival programme, with their stories echoing urban Tasmanian life and reinterpreting old tales. ICars by youth dance company Stompin explored the “blockie” world of boys and girls hangin’ out and driving round and round and round...., Artery by Tasdance interpreted the four points of the compass and Tasmanian Theatre Company presented a new play by Launceston playwright Stella Kent, Poxed .

The festival had its usual heady mix of international artists descending on our island state from across the world celebrating and exploring our global island cultures.  Dance Hall returned and people got into the groove with exotic tunes from island artists such as Zanzibar, Haiti, and Trinidad, State Secrets captured Tasmanian’s deepest darkest secrets and George Orwell’s classic Animal Farm was cheekily interpreted by the Singapore based performing arts company W!LD RICE. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens was the home for the incredible nocturnal light and sound installation Power Plant which attracted over 14,000 people.

We are very proud that our corporate partnerships were recognised by winning four Tasmanian AbaF Awards 2011.  Ten Days continued the celebrations receiving the Best Regional Event at the prestigious Australian Event Awards and winner of the major Festival and Events category at the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania Awards.

With our new artistic director on board we are already busy planning the next Ten Days experience in March 2013, but in the meantime read more of our wonderful successes in 2011.
