I Love Cars
Presented by Stompin and Ten Days on the Island

Launceston. The undisputed 'blockie' capital of Australia. On any given night boys and girls hook up, hang out and drive. Round and round.

Stompin, Launceston's youth contemporary dance company, has devised a site-specific, multi-art mash-up exploring our love affair with cars and the way they literally connect and separate us. Through celebrating the quintessentially Tasmanian notion of the 'blockie', they explore issues of freedom, escape, identity, autonomy and belonging. Featuring young dancers, dirt bike riders, 'blockie' routers, thumping stereos, squealing tyres and fuzzy dice; come and meet them in a city car park, do a few 'blockies' and explore your inner rev-head.

what is this and how does it fit with the government funded drive safely campaigns and the Drive project.
surely there are already too many young people killed on Tasmanina roads and too many young people who use the roads for risk taking behaviour.

In response to the above comment, the relationship between our petrol driven culture, young people and cars is indeed a complex one.

The road toll all across Australia and across all age groups (particularly 10 - 25) is absolutely horrifying, which is something we should each contemplate whenever we choose to get into our cars and drive somewhere.

Big hART's 'Drive' is an incredibly wrought, sobering documentary film exploring and illuminating four young men's relationship to cars and driving. Stephanie Finn, the Associate Producer of 'Drive', is the Vice Chairperson of the Stompin Board of Directors so we are well aware of the film and its impact.

Stompin's 'I Love Cars' is a live, site specific, theatrical experience involving many young people, exploring many issues relating to cars and driving in many different ways.

Issues such as community, conformity, responsibility, pride, escapism, belonging and the environment are explored through dance, music, live documentary, storytelling and video. We'd love you to come and see it and talk with us about it after the show.

We think that in giving a voice and a visible presence to our young people and a creative place for them to explore the complex feelings and ideas cars generate for them, we'll potentially open up dialogue and debate between all of us about the car, its role in our lives and its impact on our world.
